Charms: a breif history

Charm collecting in its modern form was started at the end of World War II, but charms have appeared throughout the ages, with their first use dating back to Neolithic times when people would carry them around to ward off evil spirits and their enemies. Following that, they appeared again in the Egyptian times when pharaohs adorned the jewelry to show their high status in life. They again showed up in the Middle Ages and also the Roman eras, as well as during the reign of Queen Victoria in the early 1900s.

The modern day hobby of collecting charms and fixing them to a bracelet was started in the 1940s when soldiers stationed abroad at the end of the second World War picked up local-made charms and trinkets to take home to their wives, girlfriends, sisters and mothers. These charms were fashioned out of metal and silver, and quickly the trend took off all over the world.

During the 1950s it became common practice for parents to gift their daughters with a starter bracelet as they came of age. This is a tradition that is still practiced in this day and age.

Popularity of the bracelets decreased during the 1970s, but they resurfaced again in the late 1980s, and became popular with vintage jewelry collectors. Gradually, their popularity has grown again over the years, but now charms have evolved with several variations of the jewelry available on the market.

This includes charm necklaces which feature charms fixed to a necklace. This trend came around when older women had too many charms on their bracelet, making it too heavy to wear around their wrists. By presenting them on a necklace, they were able to still wear their treasures comfortably.

The latest craze in charm jewelry to hit the world is Italian charm bracelets. These are modular stainless steel interlinking charms that are designed to be unisex. Originated in Florence Italy by jewelry company Nomination, the bracelets swept throughout the world at an amazing rate like their traditional counterparts.
